50th Anniversary Season of The Salopian Golf Society Kicks Off / 2023

With the first 2 events completed, the 2023 SGS 50th Anniversary Season is well underway. Welcome to new members Dave Jones & Steve Hand & returning member Elliot Evans.

After a warm up event held at The Astbury on 4th March in which Bob Cliffe stormed to victory with 37 points the season official opener The Glyn Edwards Trophy took place at Church Stretton in late March. A tough welcome back to those in the fair weather golfer category after the winter break.

Joined by Golfer Magazine for a quick photo to celebrate the golden anniversary, the notoriously tricky conditions up on The Long Mynd par 66 course lived up to expectation for the time of year with strong winds providing a real challenge.

2023 Captain Delwyn Humphreys drove into office alongside Vice Captain Dave Owens which was great to see.

Taking advantage of course knowledge ex Stretton member Alex Nichols took the win on a back 9 count back with 35 points overall with both Luke Blumfield & Gary Griffiths on the same. Graham Ryan took home the frog trophy.

The April event 19th Hole was held at the picturesque Vale of Llangollen Golf Club par 72 course along the River Dee. With rain moving across the course in the early afternoon the earlier tee offs probably had the slight advantage of the drier course conditions. It was Dave Giove who picked up his first SGS win with 30 points after narrowly missing out at the 2022 Breakaway so well done Dave. Bob Cliffe couldnt find his Astbury warm up form and took home the Frog trophy.

The society is looking forward to further 50th anniversary celebrations throughout the season along with another abroad trip to Portugal for the 2023 Breakaway. Roll on the summer weather for the next outing at Cleobury Mortimer Golf Course on May 6th.
