Glynn Edwards Trophy 2026 / Season Opener
2026-03-23High and lows
There's something fitting about beginning a new season at the highest point in England, and Kington Golf Club delivered exactly the kind of stage you'd want for the first competitive outing of 2026. The weather, for once, was kind — clear skies, lovely conditions, and those famous views stretching out in every direction. A proper day for golf.
New captain Tudor Owen did the honours and got the season underway on the tee, which was the moment proceedings took a slight detour. The first hole at Kington is no gentle introduction — it climbs sharply uphill, and Tudor's opening drive had other ideas, rolling back down behind him. To his credit, he wasn't alone in that particular struggle, and once the formalities were sorted and everyone had navigated the hill, we were officially off and running in 2026.
From there, the course played beautifully. The greens were fast, the conditions were excellent, and the views did what the views at Kington always do — made you briefly forget you were supposed to be concentrating on your scorecard.
Dean Robinson took the honours on the day with a very solid 37 points, a worthy winner and a good omen for the season ahead. Tom Bennett pushed him close with 35 points off a handicap of 10, a genuinely impressive showing — Tom has previous form on shorter courses and looked right at home here, which won't have gone unnoticed by the rest of the field.
Peter Hart takes home the Frog this week. The golf may not have been there on the day, but on a course with views like Kington's, there are worse consolations. There's a long season ahead, Peter.
A fine start to 2026. Here's to many more.
