SGS Breakaway / 2021
2021-07-09
What a fantastic weekend at the Marriott Breadsall Priory Golf Resort for the 2021 SGS Breakaway.
The weather was brilliant throughout and in the stunning setting of the Derbyshire countryside some excellent golf played too.
With the smell Zippys special smokes wofting across the first tee we set off on what would prove a challenging few days on the Moorland course. Day 1 winner went to Dave Sullivan with 40 points with Mark Walker taking the frog. Day 2 we were welcomed to the tee by Russ Heinz and his megaphone which I’m sure pleased the local members. James mason took the win for the day with 39 points, putting himself in a good position going into Day 3. Dave Giove takes the frog for the day.
With some of us not sad to see the back of tall moorland grasses of the Moorland Course, Day 3 we moved onto the Championship course which provided a different challenge with long steep sloping fairways. Graham Ryan took the win for the day with 35 points with Mark Walker again taking the frog title and as a result for the weekend. Bob Heinz managed the shot of the day as he hit the main road off the tee on the 16th, Semp was off down the hill and ready to go and dive in the lake to hide.
With 7 or 8 names in contention for the weekend title it was Alex Nichols who kept his cool and swooped under the radar for the 3 days scoring consistently with a 35, 37 & 34 giving a total of 106 and narrowly edging out Dave Sullivan on a back 18 count back with Dave having also scored 106 for the weekend. James Mason took 3rd spot as the only other member to break 100 for the weekend with a 102 but a shaky day 3 proved the downfall. Perhaps the beers had caught up.
Many thanks to the Marriott for their excellent hospitality and a big thanks to all those involved in organising what was a brilliant weekend. Members all already looking forward to next years breakaway in SPAIN. The next event will be the Ryder Cup v Masonic at Ludlow Golf Club on Sat 31st July followed by West Midlands Golf Club on Sat 21st August.
